exclamation points-the big debate

Hey lovlies!!

Sorry I skipped out on you yesterday.  And almost skipped out on you today.  I've been feeling a little-down this weekend, but whatevs.  Did anyone else wake up this morning and think, "it's really ONLY Tuesday!?"  I'm so thankful for a busy workday yesterday, but I mean--I was thinking it was at least Wednesday, maybe even Thursday today!  haha....and then constant rain we've had isn't helping.

But, I'm not here to talk about the weather today.  I want to discuss something very important with you.

Exclamation Points
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you read them?  In anger? Or pure excitement?

*I think this picture is hilarious.  Found it here when I googled "happy vs. anger faces"*

**Here's the back story: I sent an email out to the company a few days ago, and one of my co-workers said "Emily, why are you yelling at us? It's just a friendly reminder of our upcoming event."  I was like "what do you mean!?  I was yelling...I was just trying to get people excited!"

haha.  So, I want to know from you...

Do you read excitement when people write with exclamation points....or do read them as yelling/anger?

  1. I usually read them as excited. :)

  2. I read them as excited or depending on the sentence -- trying to get the point across. I don't think I've ever thought someone was using them in an angry way. I hope people don't think that about me, because I use them a lot!!!! Haha

  3. Exclamation points to me are excitement and CAPS is angry :) I use exclamation points all the time so I hope no one reads them as angry, guess I didn't really think about it!....whoop I did that ! without even thinking about it :)

  4. I totally use exclamation points more than anything! (see?) I use it as oh-my-gosh-how-great-is-this-sentence-I-just-wrote? I read them excitedly too, I think...

However, I do have a degree in journalism and my professors would probably shed some tears reading my blog. They HATE them. They say it means "yelling." I was limited to using ONE exclamation mark during some of my semesters...dark days, I tell you!

  5. I read all capitals as yelling, and I read exclamations as enthusiasm.

    YELLING. vs. Excited!

I'm an executive assistant at a company, so I send out a few office memos here and there. I always say "Good Morning!" or "Have a great day!" I feel like "Enjoy the rest of your day." looks so bland!!

Sometimes I also use them to lighten the mood of an email a little bit, since using smiley faces in work emails isn't usually appropriate!

    1. HAH, I just read my own comment... I wonder if some people think I'm demanding that people enjoy their day when I put the exclamation at the end of that.... haha!

  6. I read them as excited, too! My mom always reads them as yelling and e-mails me back and is generally concerned I'm yelling at her. SIGH. Hahaha. Also, that picture is all kinds of hilarious!

  7. Generally the overall tone of a work email clues me into whether they are used in a happy vs angry way, but I tend to use them to express excitement. I agree with others that CAPS shows anger or frustration.
