History was made at our church on Sunday--and I was a part! Before I tell you, let me give you a little background...
Our church is realllly traditional
(It was a pretty big deal when my Mom became one of our preachers year ago)
Some of our church members don't have ANY problem with sharing their opinions
We DO have a contemporary service, that's so far, going really well (started in Oct)

With that being said, my friend Rachel and I were USHERS in church on Sunday!!
It's a huge deal that we had women ushers at our traditional service--it's been brought up before in meetings, and there have been arguments after arguments on the subject. I guess people just think that only men should be ushers for some reason.
Rachel and I were asked to usher on Saturday, and of course we said yes!! And then, we started thinking--this is going to cause so much trouble! We're both staff children--is that going to make things better, or worse? We were going crazy...but, after church on Sunday, we got a few strange looks, and a bunch of smiles!
I'm so grateful for the opportunity, and I'm sincerely hoping that this will begin to change things for our church!
Happy Thursday!

Yay! That's so cool! One small step! :)
ReplyDeleteMy church is not traditional at all, we just have some older members stuck in the past (we're a very small church), and not really liking the change of newer music.
That's awesome! The church I attended growing up and where my parents still go (I don't because I live an hour away, but attend when I'm home visiting) is pretty traditional. We still have one service. We have male ushers, and only have female ushers when it's Baptist Men's Day or something like that. Way to go :)
ReplyDeleteThat's super cool! My church is very contemporary in terms of worship style, but not at all when it comes to gender roles. All of our ushers are male, and up until very recently, only male staff members could lead the congregation in prayer during the service. It was a big deal when the senior pastor's wife prayed for the offering a month or so ago :)
